More night terrors

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

A few weeks ago, I wrote about Randy’s daughter, Finley, and her night terrors. Looks like little Julian has the same problem of “confusional arousal.” Julian’s Mommy tried our unproven technique of putting little Julian on the potty during one of his episodes, and it worked! Are we on to something?

Do you dread the terrible twos, too?

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

Ethan’s Mom said her little one hasn’t reached the terrible twos… yet. I liked her collection of resources on the subject Dr. Greene calls it “The First Adolescence.”  “Our wonderful children instinctively want to do exactly the opposite of what we want.” It’s a frustrating time for both the parents and the kids, but luckily [...]

Getting Baby to Sleep

Friday, November 7th, 2008

Calm Mama at The Calm Before the Stork (cute name!) is having the same struggles that all of us parents do… getting her little one to sleep. Jonah used to sleep just fine, but now he stands up in his crib during nap time and cries. We’ve all been there! As Dr. Greene advised, it’s [...]

The Frustrations of Night Terrors

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Randy, I know how helpless you must have felt when your daughter Finley had her first night terrors. Dr. Greene and I definitely went through those long nights with our four children. As many as 15 percent of toddlers and pre-schoolers may experience “confusional arousal,” frequently when they’re overtired and off their sleep schedule.
Luckily an [...]

Bottles and bedtime

Monday, August 11th, 2008

Daniel and Karleigh, it’s always tough when you try to help your little one give up the bottle, especially when he’s used to falling asleep with it. Baby-bottle tooth decay is the only severe dental disease we see regularly in children under three, and the damage begins to emerge after 12 months. It sounds like [...]

Helping baby sleep on his back

Friday, August 8th, 2008

Nicole, your website gives lots of great advice about helping babies and their parents fall asleep. Your article on teaching babies to sleep on their backs reminded me of Dr. Greene’s reminder to help other caregivers understand how important this is. Caregivers such as home daycare workers and grandparents have a wealth of experience with [...]

The Most Important Question Is Always “Why”

Sunday, August 3rd, 2008

Mark, you are right about the value of looking for the why.  Kids, especially preschoolers, have a much easier time asking the why question than most adults.  Sometimes we get tired of hearing it (over and over and over), but it’s a sign of a curious mind. Of note, sleep is NOT overrated.

Asleep All Day, Up All Night?

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

Barbara — you are not alone! Most new parents deal with sleepless nights. Thanks for sharing the link to Dr. Greene’s article on the subject with your readers. I know there are some moms (and dads) out there that would really benefit from a good night’s sleep!
